What is autogamy?

Autogamy is a type of self-fertilization that occurs when two gametes from the same individual fuse. Autogamy is common in some unicellular organisms, such as protists, that can produce gametes by dividing their nuclei. Autogamy can also occur in some flowering plants that have both male and female reproductive organs. Autogamy allows organisms to reproduce without finding a mate, but it reduces genetic diversity and may lead to inbreeding depression.
