Leaves change color in autumn because they contain an abundance of chlorophyll which makes them appear green. As autumn days grow shorter, less chlorophyll is produced. Chlorophyll production begins to deteriorate when the colder months set in. All leaves gradually lose chlorophyll during the growing season, and this loss accelerates before leaf fall. The amounts of pigments change as the leaves prepare to fall from the trees.
